The Most Underrated National Parks You Must See

    jamesBy jamesOctober 1, 2025

Most people when they think about national parks in the U.S., Yellowstone or Yosemite instantly pop into their heads. And yeah, they’re amazing, don’t get me wrong. But here’s the thing — every Instagrammer, travel blogger, and random TikTok enthusiast has flooded those spots. If you want peace, solitude, and some actual “wow, is this real?” moments, you gotta go off the beaten path. That’s where the underrated national parks come in. Trust me, these are the places where you might actually enjoy nature without bumping into a hundred selfie sticks in a single hour.

    Big Bend National Park, Texas

Okay, first off, Big Bend is like Texas’ secret flex. I mean, who thinks of a massive desert with dramatic canyons and the Rio Grande just casually slicing through it? Not a lot of people, apparently. And that’s the charm. You can hike the trails, see some wild javelinas (which, by the way, look like tiny, angry pigs), and at night, the stars hit differently. No city lights, no drones buzzing, just pure cosmic magic. I remember scrolling through Twitter one night and someone joked, “Big Bend is like God’s Instagram filter but IRL.” And honestly, that’s exactly it.

If you’re into geology, the park is basically a giant natural museum. You’ve got the Chisos Mountains, desert expanses, and river canyons all mashed together like some bizarre nature smoothie. And the fact that it’s relatively empty? Mind-blowing. You can literally hike a 5-mile trail without seeing another soul. It’s wild.

    Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Now, this one’s a bit niche. Isle Royale is technically an island in Lake Superior and honestly, it feels like stepping into a movie set where nature is the only actor. It’s remote, like seriously remote — you either take a boat or a seaplane. No roads, no Wi-Fi (well, maybe some weak signals), just pure wilderness. Moose and wolves roam around like they own the place, which, let’s be real, they kinda do.

I tried telling a few friends about this place and most just gave me blank stares. “Why would you go to a lake in Michigan in, like, winter?” they asked. And sure, winter is brutal, but that’s kind of the point. There’s a sense of adventure that most people just don’t get because they’re too busy liking photos of Half Dome on Instagram. And honestly, spending a few days here, away from notifications and all the usual chaos, is kinda soul-recharging.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

I’ll admit, the first time I saw the dunes, I thought I had accidentally wandered into some desert in Morocco. Nope, Colorado. The tallest dunes in North America, and the best part? You can hike up, slide down on a sled (no, really), and feel like a kid again. Social media has kind of slept on this one, which is hilarious because it’s so photogenic. I mean, imagine golden sands with snow-capped mountains in the backdrop. It’s like someone Photoshop’ed it but nope, totally real.

The park isn’t just sand. There’s rivers, forests, and alpine meadows tucked nearby. It’s like nature decided to make a weird, amazing mashup just to mess with our sense of logic. And don’t get me started on the night sky — stargazing here is basically cheating. People post star shots online, but nothing beats seeing it with your own eyes.

    Congaree National Park, South Carolina

Here’s one you might not have heard of, and honestly, that’s perfect. Congaree is all about old-growth forest vibes. Trees that are centuries old, flooding waters, and a sense of calm that almost feels spiritual. You can hike elevated boardwalks, paddle through swamps, and spot wildlife like bobcats and owls. It’s kind of like stepping into a living, breathing storybook.

I remember posting a picture from Congaree on Instagram, and my friends were like, “Wait, this exists? I thought only fairy tales had places like this.” Honestly, yeah. It does exist, and it’s magical. And because it’s so underrated, you can wander for hours without seeing anyone else. Perfect spot if you like your adventures a little quiet and a lot green.

    Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

Lassen is one of those parks that people skip because it doesn’t have a giant Yosemite-like cliff. But if you’re into volcanos, bubbling mud pots, and random geothermal features that make you feel like you’re on Mars, this is your jam. Hiking here is like exploring a natural science experiment. One moment you’re walking through a forest, the next, you’re staring at steam vents and hot springs.

And the best part? Zero crowds. You can hike, explore, and feel like the first human ever to discover this stuff. Social media? Pretty quiet on this one, which is shocking because the landscapes are insane. I even made a TikTok here once, and honestly, the engagement was low — more proof that this gem is still flying under the radar.

    Wrapping it up

Look, everyone loves the big-name parks and for good reason. They’re spectacular. But the underrated parks? They have a vibe you can’t really replicate. More space, more peace, and honestly, more stories to tell. These parks are like the indie bands of the national park world — not everyone knows them, but the ones who do? They’re obsessed.
